When the first fort was first build along the Casloosahatchee river its strategic importance lied in its ability to protect against attacks from the Seminole Indians. Fort Myers Florida has retained its strategic importance to this day, but now it serves as the seat and main commercial centre of the Lee County. Its lovely weather, historical sites and vibrant culture, together with its natural beauty have ensured that it is also a thriving tourist destination.

When in this city, a visit to the National Wildlife Refuge is simply a must. The park was named after the famous J. N. Ding Darling, a respected cartoonist and conservationist. The 6000 acre park contains some of the wildest wetlands in the state. Among the many species of wildlife living there, it also boast more than 250 bird species. The park is world famous for its enormous migratory bird population.

History boffs, art lovers and theatre enthusiasts will all love this city. It would be unthinkable to miss an opportunity to see a production at the famous Florida Repertory Theatre. Built in 1908, this theatre was originally a Vaudeville house and was once patronized by the likes of Henri Ford and Thomas Edison. Today, the theatre offers a wide variety of superior productions. It is no wonder that it is known as one of the very best repertory theatres in America.

No tourist visiting the City of Palms should miss an opportunity to tour the Edison and Ford Winter Estate. This large estate used to contain the winter residences of both the famous celebrities after which it is named. Visitors can delight in the many interesting inventions and other articles displayed in the Estate Museum. Visitors are also delighted by the Edison Botanical Research Laboratory.

Sanibel Island is the ideal place to spend a relaxing day in magnificent surroundings. It boasts truly stunning beaches and the water is crystal clear and clean. This barrier island is also world famous for its fabulous shelling opportunities. Shell collectors from all over the world flock to the island in the hope of stumbling over a rare specimen. The weather is excellent throughout the year.

Of course, fishermen simply love the City of Palms. It offers a wide variety of fishing opportunities. It is possible to fish from the pier at Sanibel Lighthouse and great catches have been reported. There are also many operators that rent boats and several charter companies that offer fishing trips to go after Spanish Mackerel, Sea Trout and Blue Fish, to name just a few. While there is certain a lot of fun and adventurous things to do in the City of Palms, it is also possible to shop in any of the numerous upmarket establishments. Excellent accommodation that will suit every taste and budget is available and there are numerous excellent restaurants. The night life is vibrant and the city caters for every conceivable entertainment need.
