Butterfly Centre In Bohol, Philippines

By Jonny Blair

You could be forgiven for thinking a "Butterfly Centre" is a boring way to spend an hour of your travel time. But then we ended up in this quality Butterfly Centre called "Flying Colours" as part of our tour round Bohol island in The Philippines. We were quite surprised by it!

It was my first time to visit a butterfly centre. So what actually happens here? First up the entry cost is 35 Philippine Pesos. Works out less than $1 US Dollar so paying it is not an issue. The price includes a guided tour - a lady basically tells you about butterflies, takes you round the sanctuary and helps you take photos.

Once you enter you first see the caterpillars - they are living in glass boxes eating away until they turn into cocoons. Some of the green caterpillars are quite big and you can hold them. Then there is a box with those in cocoons and finally they become butterflies and you can see the process happening live - after a couple of weeks suddenly that caterpillar becomes a butterfly. Quite amazing really. Photos are completely allowed and you can get snap happy!

You get to see the world's largest moth as well and the biggest butterfly native to the Philippines. These are dead however and you will see them in a box, preserved. You can pose for fun photos with them and also with pretend butterfly wings. It is a really brilliant experience and a magical place to visit.

At the end of the tour you are outside in the garden and you can see lots of butterflies of different colours and get photos of them. I totally love a lifestyle of travel and these places are really amazing to see.
