Backpacking In Dohuk, Kurdistan, Iraq

By Jonny Blair

The town of Dohuk can also be spelt Duhok and it sits in the northern part of Iraqi Kurdistan. Realistically its part of Kurdistan, politically it's in Iraq. This is a really up and coming city to travel and go backpacking in and its worth seeing.

5 Things to do in Dohuk

1. The Corniche Promenade

Dohuk has a fantastic corniche which is basically a promenade which runs the length of the city. Take a leafy and leisurely stroll through Dohuk's promenade and you will love this beautiful town.

2. Dohuk Dam and Dohuk Valley

This might just be your highlight from Dohuk. Walk out of town and you will see a massive dam which has been built against completely immaculate and scenic countryside. The walk takes you up a hill past a proud Kurdistan flag and then there it is - the Dohuk Dam.

You will love the amazing views from the Dohuk valley.

3. Dohuk Waterfalls

First of all - these waterfalls are FAKE. They are not natural at all. We caught them out one morning while walking past they had turned one of them off!! However this doesn't stop the locals going and enjoying them and you'll want to get your photo taken anyway as you walk past.

4. The Bazaar in Dohuk

Every town or city in this region seems to have a market, known normally as a Bazaar. Dohuk of course also has one which is very big and has lots of nooks and crannies to it. Really worth a look around to do shopping in.

5. Dohuk Art Gallery

Dohuk has an art gallery in the town centre. This makes a perfect place to check out some Iraqi and Kurdish art and walk all around it admiring the quite breathtaking art on display.

So you'll not be short of things to do in Dohuk. There are also a load of cool restaurants including Omara Restaurant Dohuk and many in and around the bazaar. Smoking shish is a common pastime too on the streets - but its 100% guys doing it - as a foreigner you'd probably be the only girl there smoking.
